Just for Fun
Looking for a good documentary to watch? Read on for Lindsey’s review of “The Barkley Marathons: The Race That Eats Its Young.”
My husband is pretty obsessed with documentaries so, when he suggested we watch The Barkley Marathons, I agreed but I mostly planned to fall asleep within the first 15 minutes. This was not the case. This documentary is a weirdly compelling film depicting what some have described as the toughest marathon in the world. The torturous 50+ hour, 100 mile scavenger hunt is quite psychotically mixed with rules such as an application process that isn’t explained and an entry fee of $1.60 along with a license plate from your own state. The marathon is set up as a 20 mile loop that brings the runners back to their starting point 5 times. And only a few people have ever finished it, resulting in multiple years where there are no winners. Located in the mountains of Tennessee, this marathon was inspired by the pathetic escape of James Earl Ray who managed to get 8 miles away from Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary after being on the run for 55 hours. After hearing the story, the marathon’s creator, bet that he could do at least 100 miles. And thus a race was born. This documentary is a must watch. – Lindsey S.
