We’d like to introduce you all to our newest employee, John (with an ‘h’)! John joined us at the beginning of the month and will be working with our research and trading teams as he’s settling in and learning the business. Don’t hesitate to holler a hello in his direction the next time you stop in the office! Here’s a little bit more about him…
Where are you originally from?
Yankton, South Dakota.
Tell us about your family:
I grew up in a large family with five brothers and one sister (yes, my sister is quite tough). My father earned a master’s degree in Biology from the University of South Dakota, which he now uses to “mold young minds” as a high school science teacher. My Mom was a Ballerina in Poland who immigrated to the United States and started a dance studio in Yankton, of all places.
What do you like to do in your free time?
Some of my favorite pass-times include hosting people at my house where they are forced to observe my mediocre grilling abilities (practice makes perfect), reading, golf, and soccer.
What is your favorite place you’ve visited?
My grandmother lives smack dab in the middle of Warsaw, Poland. A few years ago, my family and I took a trip to visit and it was a grand time.
It’s estimated that 90% of Warsaw was destroyed in WWII. After the war, the Poles rebuilt many of the buildings as they were prior to the war from memory and pictures– so you now have new buildings sandwiching the few old structures still standing. Many of the old buildings that weren’t destroyed still have bullet holes on the exterior façade. It was a great trip!
What are some of your favorite books (or movies or podcasts)?
As for books, the first novel I ever read is called The Passage which was recently turned into a TV thriller on Fox. The book is now the first part in a trilogy and will keep you on your toes the entire time.
As for movies, my wife would say I’m a sci-fi geek, especially when it comes to Star Wars. Despite my odd affection for all the Star Wars movies, my favorite individual film is Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, starring Matthew McConaughey. The film provides the perfect combination of drama, thrill, and accurate cosmological concepts (Nolin hired an actual cosmologist to keep the movie as factual as a sci-fi film can get).
As for podcasts, one of my favorites is Robinhood Snacks. The daily podcast, which airs every weekday morning, is only 15 minutes long but gives you important information about a few stocks and market news from the day prior. Almost like a little “snack” from the stock market.
What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
If finance didn’t work out, I always wanted to fly fighter jets for the US Military.
Name a profession you would not like to have.
Shoe Salesman. I speak from experience as I worked at a shoe store in high school…
What is one of your guilty pleasures?
My sweet wife and I typically celebrate “big” life events by eating ice cream and watching a movie together; however, I nearly always buy a box of Golden Oreos and crush multiple cookies into the ice cream. How many cookies do I use per bowl? I’m not going to say, because that is my guilty pleasure.
Who are two people you would like to have dinner with (dead or alive)?
I think there are two people who have fundamentally changed the world I live in, and both would be great dinner guests. First would be Jesus Christ, who undoubtedly changed the world more than anyone. Second, George Washington, who was a leader in the creation of one of the greatest countries in the history of the world.
