P&A Spotlight: Clay Finck

Questions & Answers with Clay Finck

Where are you originally from?

I grew up in a farming family in Falls City, NE. After high school, I attended the University of Nebraska – Lincoln, and graduated with a degree in Actuarial Science. I spent a few years after college in Omaha before making Lincoln home again.

Tell us about your family:

My parents still live in Falls City. My older brother is a 5th generation farmer working with my dad. He has three boys that always keep family time entertaining. My younger brother is a software engineer for Union Pacific and lives in Omaha.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I enjoy staying active with sports and being outside. I like to play basketball, pickleball, and golf. I also spend a lot of time on the lake in the summer. My parents have been taking us to Table Rock Lake for years, and my girlfriend and I frequently make it to Johnson Lake (where she grew up).

What is your favorite movie or TV show?

I don’t watch a ton of TV, but occasionally I’ll get roped into a crime thriller like Breaking Bad or Ozark.

What has been your favorite and/or most memorable vacation?

A few years ago, some friends and I visited the Pacific Northwest. We stayed at a family friend’s cabin in the middle of Washington and spent some time going through the Olympic National Park. It was fun seeing a variety of different environments in a short period of time (ocean, mountains, forest, the city, etc.), but what I appreciated most was the memories made with close friends.

How did you become interested in the investment/financial planning profession?

I’ve been interested in investing ever since I read a Warren Buffett biography at the age of 18. This interest led to several conversations with friends and acquaintances related to money – how to earn it, how to spend it, and how to invest it. In light of those conversations, I’ve come to believe that financial planners play an invaluable role in helping people make the best use of their money and achieve their financial goals.

If you could do anything else for a living what would it be?

The sport of basketball will never get old for me. I’d probably be a high school basketball coach or work in player development.
